Estación Relevo BBC India

BBC INDIAN OCEAN RELAY STATION

Date:  29 October 2012

Dear Williams,

It is always nice to receive reports of our transmissions, even from areas outside our broadcast target area.

The transmission you picked up is primarily targeted into East Africa, with secondary target area of North Africa. Apart from the frequency you picked us on, other frequencies in use are 21470,17640, 15420, 15150,12095, 12045,12035,11925,11860,9460,9410, , 7435,6140,6005 and 5955kHz (of course at different times).

We have two Marconi 250kW B6131 transmitters using Pulse Width Modulation.
Antenna systems are six Marconi 4 band arrays strung across four towers.
We broadcast real time programs received from London via satellite.

The transmitting station was opened and operated by the BBC in 1988, in 1997 as part of BBC transmission privatisation; the management of the site was transferred to Merlin Communications, a company formed by ex BBC staff and which was later purchased by VT Group. VT Group was later acquired by Babcock International which is now managing the site.
I am pleased to confirm your report on frequency 15490 kHz and the timing as being correct. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any query.

Yours sincerely,

Jose Tambara (Senior Engineer)
